বিহারের সমভূমি অঞ্চল এই রাজ্যের পশ্চিম থেকে পূর্বদিকে প্রবাহিত গঙ্গা নদী কর্তৃক দ্বিধাবিভক্ত। বিহারের বনাঞ্চল এর পরিমাণ ৬,৭৬৪.১৪ বর্গকিলোমিটার যা এই রাজ্যের ভৌগোলিক আয়তনের ৬.৮ শতাংশ।

 রাজ্যের সরকারি ভাষা হিন্দি ও  উর্দু কিন্তু রাজ্যের অধিকাংশ মানুষের মাতৃভাষা অঙ্গিকা , ভোজপুরি, মাগধী, মৈথিলী ও বজিকার মধ্যে যে কোনো একটি বিহারের ভাষা।

নালান্দা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়

           পাটনা বিহারের রাজধানী তথা বৃহত্তম শহর। এটি পূর্ব ভারতের দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম শহরও (কলকাতার পরে) । ২০১১ সালের জনগণনা অনুসারে, পাটনা মহানগর অঞ্চলের জনসংখ্যা ২,০৪৬,৬৫২। এটি ভারতের ১৯শ বৃহত্তম মহানগর। অন্যদিকে পাটনার পৌর এলাকার জনসংখ্যা ১,৬৮৩,২০০। এটি ভারতের ১৮শ বৃহত্তম পৌরসংস্থা। পটনা হাইকোর্টএই শহরেই অবস্থিত।

বিহার ভারতের একটি পর্যটন কেন্দ্র হিসাবে বহুযুগ ধরে যায়গা করে নিয়েছে।  

পাটনা সিটি, জনপ্রিয় হিসাবে পরিচিত পাটনা সাহেব বা পাটনা সাহেব, ভারতের বিহারের পাটনার একটি পাড়া। এটি ভারতের শিখরা অত্যন্ত পবিত্র হিসাবে বিবেচনা করে। শিখদের দশম গুরু গুরু গোবিন্দ সিং সেখানে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন। পাটনা সাহেব গুরুদ্বারাকে পাঁচটি "তখত" বা শিখদের কর্তৃত্বের আসনের অন্যতম বলে মনে করা হয়। শিখরা শ্রদ্ধার সাথে পাটনা সাহেব নামে অভিহিত হলেও এই জায়গার নাম হরমিন্দার তখত T বিখ্যাত গুরু গোবিন্দ সাহেব গুরুদ্বার সারা বিশ্ব থেকে শিখদের জন্য একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মন্দির। অশোক রাজপথ (রাস্তা) পাটনা শহরকে পাটনার সাথে সংযুক্ত করে।

বুদ্ধ গয়া

বৌদ্ধধর্ম ও জৈনধর্মের জন্মভূমি হওয়ায় বিহার ভারতের সাংস্কৃতিক ইতিহাসের একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য স্থান।পর্যটকরা এই স্থানে কিছু চমৎকার মুঘল ও হিন্দু স্থাপত্য দেখতে পাবেন।

বিহার একটি সমৃদ্ধ প্রাচীন সভ্যতার দোলনা ছিল, একটি উপকেন্দ্র যেখানে জৈন ও বৌদ্ধ ধর্মেরগতি লাভ করে।

এই রাজ্যের নাম ‘বিহার’ থেকে উদ্ভুত হয়েছে, যার অর্থ হল বৌদ্ধ মঠ, কারণ অতীতে এই স্থান বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের একটি প্রধান প্রশিক্ষণ কেন্দ্র ছিল।

বিহারের প্রাচীনত্ব ষষ্ঠ শতাব্দী খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দ পুরনো। এইখানেই বৈশালীতে ভগবান মহাবীর জন্মগ্রহণ করেন এবং প্রভু বুদ্ধ বোধগয়ায় বোধি বৃক্ষের নিচে ‘জ্ঞানলাভ’ করেন। এই ভূমি বহু রাজবংশের উত্থান এবং পতন দেখেছে; যেমন – গুপ্ত, পাল ও পরবর্তীকালে মুসলিম শাসন।

পবিত্র গঙ্গা নদী, এই রাজ্যের মধ্য দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হয়ে এই রাজ্যকে দুই ভাগে বিভক্ত করেছে।

বিহার ভ্রমণের সেরা সময় হল অক্টোবর থেকে মার্চ যখন আবহাওয়া স্বাস্হ্যকর থাকে।

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, was born there. Patna Saheb Gurudwara is considered to be one of the five "thrones" or the seat of authority of the Sikhs. Although the Sikhs respectfully call it Patna Saheb, the place is called Harminder Takht. Famous Guru Gobind Saheb Gurudwara is an important temple for Sikhs from all over the world. Ashoka Rajpath (Road) connects the city of Patna with Patna.
